Peugeot . How to Change Gears on a Honda 90ccAlthough it's not difficult, shifting the gears on your smaller Honda motorcycle is not an intuitive process for new riders. Your motorcycle's transmission differs greatly from the setup found on a manually-shifted automobile, requiring you to disengage the clutch with a hand lever and shift with a foot lever. While it may be a bit awkward, practicing your shifting techniques will make the process seem like second nature. For best results, find an open area in which to practice safely and dedicate an hour a day to hone your skills. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Mount your motorcycle and raise its kick stand. Rock the motorcycle gently forward and backward to ensure that the motorcycle is in neutral. Start the motorcycle and pull in the front brake lever with your right hand. 2 Pull in the clutch lever with your left hand and hold it in place. Using your left foot, push the shift lever downwards until it clicks into first gear. Release the front brake lever and roll the throttle grip backwards slightly. 3 Release the clutch lever slowly. Roll the throttle back a bit more as the motorcycle creeps forward. Release the clutch lever completely and apply more throttle to accelerate to 15 to 20 miles per hour. 4 Roll the throttle grip forward to close the throttle. Pull in the clutch lever. Push the shift lever upwards firmly using the top of your left foot to shift into second gear. Release the clutch lever smoothly and roll the throttle grip back to accelerate. Shift into a higher gear as your speed increases, repeating the process until you are in fourth, or "top," gear. 5 Roll the throttle grip forward to close the throttle and pull in the clutch lever. Push the shift lever downwards with your left foot to shift into a lower gear. "Blip" the throttle by rolling the throttle grip back in a quick, short movement to increase the engine speed. Release the clutch lever smoothly and apply throttle as needed. Repeat as necessary until you are in first, or "bottom," gear. 6 Pull in the clutch lever. Brake to a complete stop by applying both front and rear brakes. Place your right foot on the ground once you have stopped completely. Shift into first gear if you have not done so already. Push the shift lever upwards lightly to shift into neutral. If your motorcycle is equipped with a neutral indicator, it will illuminate at this time. Release the clutch lever slowly until you are sure the motorcycle is in neutral. Lower the kick stand and turn the ignition switch off. Tips & Warnings If you are uncertain about learning to ride your motorcycle on your own, contact the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for more information about learning how to ride in a safe, controlled environment. Always wear proper protective equipment when riding, including a motorcycle-specific helmet. ResourcesTheMotorcycleSafetyFoundation: Rider Course Info
Peugeot . How to Change Gear Oil in a CR250Replacing the gear oil on your Honda CR250 is a fairly easy and economical do-it-yourself repair that will save you a few dollars. Gear oil is a lubricating motor oil made specifically for transmissions and differentials of motorcycles and heavy trucks. While similar to motor oil, it has a higher viscosity to protect moving parts. In use, gear oil does not reach the high temperatures that engine oil reaches. It is recommended to regularly change gear oil. Failure to do so could result in damage to your CR250's clutch system. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Pliers Cable tie Oil drip pan Fresh light gear oil Step by Step : 1 Start your CR250 and allow it to warm up. Once it's warmed up (after about 5 minutes), kill the engine. 2 Place an oil drip pan underneath the engine, then remove the drain plug. The drain plug for the gear oil is located underneath the engine toward the center. Use pliers if you cannot unscrew the plug with your fingers. 3 Pull the clutch lever in and secure it with a cable tie. This allows the gear oil to drain from between the plates of your CR250 clutch. 4 Drain for five minutes, then replace the gear oil drain plug. 5 Refill with the correct amount of light gear oil, approximately 650cc, as is marked by the filler hole on your Honda CR250. Release the clutch lever. *High gear transmission. Figure 9-5 shows a large gear placed next to a small gear so that their teeth mesh. If the large gear has 30 teeth and the small gear has 10, the large gear turns once to every three turns of the small gear. In other words, the large gear turns only a third of the way around for every complete revolution of the small gear. The gears in your transmission work on this principle, which is called a 3:1 gear ratio. As you can see back in Figures 9-1 and 9-4, the turning drive train brings a gear into contact with other gears of different sizes. That's why the transmission input shaft that runs between the engine and the transmission turns at the same rate of speed as the engine, but the Chapter 9: Take the Drive Train: Understanding Transmissions... 1 7C transmission output shaft that leaves the transmission and carries the power via the driveshaft and differential to the rear wheels turns at a different rate, depending on which gears in the transmission are engaged. (If you're feeling mind-boggled, reread Steps 5 through 10 in "How the power flows through the drive train" earlier in this chapter.) In Low gear, the gears in the transmission make the driveshaft (and therefore the wheels) turn more slowly than the engine. In fact, the driveshaft may turn only once for every, four engine revolutions. All the power of the swiftly running engine is channeled into those few turns. The wheels turn more slowly, but they have more power to put into each turn, so your car can start, climb a hill, or pull a trailer. Not only does the engine run faster, but you also have the mechanical advantage of the big gear providing more leverage by turning slowly but with more force. In Second gear, the engine turns more slowly than it did in Low, putting out less power but more speed because the wheels can turn more quickly. In this gear, the driveshaft may turn once for every two engine revolutions, or twice as fast as in Low gear. In High gear, the gear ratio can drop to around 1:1, which means that the engine and the driveshaft turn at relatively the same rate of speed. The wheels can go very fast; yet the engine doesn't put out additional power to produce that speed. Because you've overcome inertia by the time you shift into high gear and generally have nothing more to contend with than wind Peugeot . 1990 oil temp run high on a carbiolet?

In Fifth gear, the ratio is usually an overdrive of around 0.75:1, which means that the engine can turn more slowly than the output shaft's speed. You want to be at that ratio on the highway for good fuel economy. However, you do need to downshift if you want to pass someone, because you don't have much engine power with this ratio. Automatic Transmissions Did you know that today's automatic transmissions are computer-controlled hydraulic systems? Previous automatic transmissions were mechanically controlled. This section covers the basic features of both. An automatic transmission works on the same basis as a manual transmis sion does, with a gear selector on the steering column or floor to allow you to tell the car to park, idle, go in reverse, go forward at varying speeds, or Peugeot . But instead of a manual clutch, an automatic transmission uses a torque converter and hydraulic pressure to change gears automatically. The torque converter replaces the standard transmission's clutch. The torque converter is a fluid coupling that transfers power from the engine to the transmission input shaft. It allows for smooth transfer of power and at highway speeds can be locked up to reduce slippage and improve fuel economy. Shifting in an automatic transmission is controlled by either a hydraulic system or an electronic system. Hydraulically controlled transmissions con sist of an intricate network of valves and other components along with hydraulic pressure to control the operation of planetary gearsets (see Figure 9-6). These gearsets can be fashioned to generate three, four, or five forward speeds. Peugeot . Where is the immobiliser to?

In Drive, as the car's speed increases, so does the pressure, and higher gears are brought into play. The hydraulic pressure drives the transmission gears by means of friction bands and plates.
